Let’s Talk About It: Why Simple Conversations Matter More Than Perfect Parenting

Some of the sweetest moments in our home don’t happen during big vacations, birthday parties, or holiday dinners.
They happen over bowls of cereal.
In the car on the way to school.
While folding laundry.
Or five minutes before bedtime when a grandchild suddenly asks a question that opens the door to their heart.
As grandparents raising grandchildren, we often feel like we have to have all the answers.
The truth?
Our grandchildren aren’t usually looking for perfect answers.
They’re looking for someone who will stay in the conversation.
That’s why I love conversation starters.
Not because they’re magical questions—but because they create intentional moments where children feel seen, heard, and valued.
Sometimes all it takes is asking:
“What made you smile today?”
“What’s something you’re proud of?”
“Who made your day a little brighter?”
Those little questions become bridges.
They tell a child:
“Your thoughts matter.”
“Your feelings matter.”
“You matter.”
And here’s something I’ve learned…
Children don’t always open up when we expect them to.
Sometimes they’ll shrug.
Sometimes they’ll say, “I don’t know.”
Sometimes they’ll change the subject entirely.
Don’t give up.
Keep asking.
Keep listening.
Keep showing up.
Consistency builds trust.
One conversation at a time.
This month’s 31 Days of Conversation Starters isn’t another thing to add to your already full plate.
It’s simply an invitation.
An invitation to pause.
To laugh.
To remember.
To dream together.
To create memories that your grandchildren may carry long after they’ve forgotten what was for dinner.
Some conversations will be silly.
Some may become surprisingly deep.
Some may even help you understand each other in brand-new ways.
That’s the beauty of talking.
You never know which question will become the one your grandchild remembers for the rest of their life.
So print the calendar.
Stick it on the refrigerator.
Leave it on the kitchen table.
Ask one question each day.
No pressure.
No perfect answers.
Just one heart connecting with another.
Because at the end of the day, the greatest gift we can give our grandchildren isn’t having all the answers.
It’s making sure they always know they have someone willing to listen.
Let’s keep talking.
One conversation.
One day.
One heart at a time. ❤️

Conversation Challenge:
Print this month’s calendar and invite everyone at the dinner table—or even in the car—to answer the day’s question. You may be surprised by what you learn about your grandchildren… and about yourself.
